Record numbers of overseas students are staying back with Australia Work Visas for Graduates that has 4 years validity. Most of the visas are inclusive of complete working rights. The numbers of these overseas students remaining in Australia after studies are estimated to increase further in the future. This is owing to the enhanced appeal of Australia as an overseas study destination, as quoted by the ABC Net AU.

Professor Brian Schmidt the Australian National University Vice-Chancellor has said that these overseas students are not displacing other workers. 50,000 overseas graduates were on Australia Subclass 485 Visa in March 2018. This was an addition of 16,000 in just 1 year.

Shayne Neumann the Immigration Spokesman of the Labor said that overseas students contribute significantly to the Australian economy. 350, 000 overseas students were enrolled in Australia in 2017. This was an increase of 100,000 for past 3 years.

There is a lag between the enrolment, graduation and Australia 485 Subclass Visa granting to overseas students. This implies the percentage of overseas graduates working in Australia will enhance even more in the coming years.

Time or occupation restrictions are not applicable to the Australia Graduate Post Study Visa stream. This offers 2 years visa upon completion of studies for those completing minimum 2 years degree. It is up to 4 years in case of certain higher qualifications.

The Vice-Chancellor of ANU said that the visa offers financial incentives and flexibility to overseas students. These are in fact highly valued talents that are hard to attract, added the Vice-Chancellor.
