Here’s a Canada work permit that is specifically meant for skilled foreign workers who bring significant benefits to Canada on the cultural, economic, and social fronts. This is the SBWP (Significant Benefit Work Permit).

What do you mean by Significant Benefit Work Permit?

SBWP is a Canada work permit that gives you the opportunity to demonstrate how your work or intended contribution to Canada is going to be beneficial to Canada culturally, socially, or economically.

When you apply for a Significant Benefit Work Permit, it becomes necessary for you to meet certain requirements that are part of this visa program. To apply, you will have to satisfy certain criteria and demonstrate how you wish to increase your chances of succeeding in your work in Canada.

This permit is best for you if you are an entrepreneur, investor, artist, or anyone who is poised to make a significant impact on Canada.

The merits of your project or career goal in Canada will be considered while assessing your application for an SBWP.

The highlighted benefit

When it comes to applying for an SBWP, you can get the benefit that you will not require to comply with any LMIA requirement. All you need to do is to meet the criteria prescribed by Canada for this permit.

Talking about criteria, you as an applicant for an SBWP will have to satisfy certain considerations. These are factors that will bring benefits to Canada socially, culturally, and/or economically. Before we look at those considerations, let’s see what submissions will you need to make to prove that your activity in Canada will bring significant benefits to the country. You will have to present evidence that you:

  • Have accreditation issued by an academic institution in your area of expertise professionally, or is even related to one
  • Have received national/international patents/awards
  • Have membership in an organization that needs its members to exhibit excellence
  • Serve in a position as a leader in your organization, holding a distinguished position

Considerations

As already said, there are two things you have to prove to apply for an SBWP. One is that you hold a distinguished status in your field of profession. The other is that your work in Canada will be of great benefit to the country in an economic, social, and/or cultural manner.

We talked about considerations to meet in order to be eligible for an SBWP. Here they are in some detail:

Economic considerations

You must

  • Prevent the disruption of employment for Canada PRs or Canadian citizens
  • Advance Canadian industry by facilitating job creation, market expansion, and innovation in service/product
  • Provide economic stimulus to Canada’s remote areas

Social benefit considerations

You must be able to

  • Address threats to the health and safety of Canada PRs Canadian citizens

Documentations needed while applying for SBWP

There’s not much of a difference between applying for an SBWP and any other normal Canada work permit. However, you must be knowledgeable about the documentation required to apply for SBWP. Here they are:

  • Proof of experience, accreditation, and/or competence at a high level in the field of work of the applicant
  • An application completed fully on IRCC’s GCMS (Global Case Management System).
  • Proof that you paid the employer compliance fee
  • Evidence in detail of how the work of the foreign national results in significant benefit for Canada economically, culturally, and/or socially.

Who uses SBWP?

The following categories of foreign workers are known to commonly use SBWP:

  • Intra-company transferees
  • Workers in television and film production who plays a central role in the production
  • Self-employed workers and entrepreneurs
  • Emergency repair personnel tasked to work on commercial or industrial equipment
