Jill Biden, the new First Lady of the USA, will monitor a task force for US immigration, intended to reunite families that were separated at the US-Mexico border when Trump was the President. Earlier, US President Joe Biden had scrapped the “No Tolerance” policy in USA immigration via executive order.
Under the Trump administration, thousands of people looking for asylum in the US were separated from their children and weren’t deported. The efforts at reunification of these families will be monitored by Julissa Reynoso, Ms. Biden’s Chief of Staff.
As per data, there are close to 3,000 children separated from their parents on the southern border of the US with Mexico in 2018. Under the now-scrapped zero-tolerance policy, migrants who illegally entered into the US were attempted to be prosecuted. As per the ACLU, a minimum of 1,000 more families got separated since 2018.
The zero-tolerance policy had thousands of parents been deported. These migrants were left with the choice of either returning to their own volatile countries with their children or leaving the children behind in the USA with relatives.
Now, under the new policy of the Biden administration, individual assessments of the cases related to these migrants will be made.
