Steven Marshall the Premier of South Australia has said that the region requires 15,000 extra immigrants annually. The regional Mayors want hundreds of extra immigrants in their areas, he added Western Victoria’s Warrnambool Standard recently carried a headline on the front page – “ Needed – 1,000 workers”.

Australian regions are demanding more skilled immigrants even as the population of Australia will cross 25 million people.

The Australian government is asking the new immigrants to work and live outside Melbourne and Sydney.  87% of the freshly arrived skilled immigrants out of the total 111,000 in 2017 settled in the 2 biggest cities.

Alan Tudge the Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship Minister of Australia has expressed similar views in his speech on the occasion. He has demanded an enhanced geographic distribution of immigration. This is to decrease the pressure on infrastructure and housing, as quoted by the Guardian.

The congestion pressures in Sydney and Melbourne will be eliminated with an even distribution of immigration said Tudge. He was addressing the Business Council in Australia. On the other hand, nearly all the immigration at present is currently to the 2 largest cities, he added.

The other parts of Australia are demanding more skilled immigrants said the Minister. He reaffirmed the stand of the Government that the nation relies on the significant intake of skilled immigrants. Immigrants enhance the tax base. They lower the median working age and fill employment gaps, he added.

Just being open to accepting skilled immigrants is not adequate, said Tudge. In the case of international super talent, we must also actively seek them, he added.
