The Department of Immigration is witnessing a surge of Australia citizenship applications after the contentious changes were disapproved by the Senate. The Turnbull government failed in its efforts to pass extensive reforms to the Australia citizenship in the Senate. This included a stringent language test in English for applicants of citizenship.
The officials of the Department of Immigration said that the applications for Australia citizenship had reduced drastically. This was owing to the crackdown announced by Peter Dutton the Immigration Minister in April 2017.
However last week the Government of Australia failed to obtain the approval from Senate for these proposed reforms. This has resulted in a fresh rush of applications for Australian citizenship.
An official of the Immigration Department Christine Dacey said that after the announcement of Senate disapproval, the applications have increased. She informed this to the Senate Estimates, as quoted by the SBS.
The proposed reforms bill to citizenship would have enhanced the waiting times for Australia PR holders to 4 years from 1 year. It would have also introduced a mandatory exam in the English language along with a test on ‘Australian Values’. An official of the Immigration Department Christine Dacey said that there was a similar rush earlier this year.
It was in April when the changes to citizenship were first announced. It was around 20th April that the rush in applications was first witnessed this year. Later there was a steep decline in applications for citizenship. This was lower when compared to the earlier 12 months, added Ms. Dacey.
