In the array of Canada immigration programs that the Canadian government has taken to facilitate the creation of more Canada PR visa holders, a new program is on the cards. This program comes after a successful Canada immigration program that was run in 2021: the temporary to permanent residency program.

What was the temporary to permanent residency program?

It was on April 14, 2021, that IRCC announced the temporary resident to permanent resident pathway. The aim of the program was to convert over 90,000 essential workers and international graduates to permanent residents in Canada. There were 3 streams under this program namely:

Stream	Max no. of candidates
Stream for international graduates from institutes in Canada	40,000
Stream for workers in healthcare	20,000
Stream for workers in essential occupations	30,000

IRCC accepted applications for this program from May 6, 2021, till either the point where the cap is met or Nov 5, 2021, whichever happened first.

What’s the new TR to PR Canada immigration pathway?

The new immigration program, unlike the 2021 TR to PR program, isn’t one to address an immediate problem related to the availability of skilled foreign workers. Rather, this is a pathway that will allow international students and temporary residents in Canada to convert their status to permanent residents in Canada.

The new TR to PR program extends the policy of utilizing the temporary visa holders who are already residing in Canada. The advantage is that these candidates have work experience in Canada or have had education in Canada. They will also adapt better when they become Canadian permanent residents.

Canada has already reached 200,000 resettlements, creating new permanent residents.

Chasing the ambitious numbers in Canada Immigration Plan 2022–2024

The new program is expected to have a considerable role in meeting the target of 432,000 newcomers in 2022, as laid out in the Canada Immigration Plan 2022-2024. Canada has set a target of 40,000 new Canada PR under federal economic policies for 2022, including those coming under the new TR to PR pathway announced lately.
