Types of Australia work visas

Temporary Skill Shortage Visa

Another name for this visa is Subclass 482. People with this visa can live and work in Australia for four years. An Australian employer has to sponsor the candidates to apply for this visa. Candidates need professional skills and experience, which should be relevant to the job vacancy they have applied for. Temporary Skill Shortage Visa or TSS visa holders can work in Australia under any one of the three streams given below:
  • The Short-Term stream

Employer Scheme Visa

Australia introduced the Employer Nomination Scheme visa for those employers who want to sponsor skilled workers to live and work in Australia permanently. Applicants have to possess appropriate qualifications and work experience for the job they have applied for. The occupations that candidates have applied for should be included in the combined list of eligible skilled occupations. This visa is also known as Subclass 186. There are three streams under this visa which include:
  • Temporary Residence Transition Stream
  • Direct Entry Stream
  • Agreement Stream

Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa

This visa is a pathway to apply for permanent residence in Australia. Another name for the Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa is Subclass 494. This provisional visa allows candidates to live and work in Australia for up to five years. The visa's validity period starts from the day candidates receive it. Candidates must be employed in the job listed in the occupation. Candidates have to work in a position available in the businesses sponsoring them.

Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA)

Under the Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA), employers can employ skilled and semi-skilled workers. Employment will be given to those who hold positions for which employers cannot get skilled workers in Australia. The agreement was entered into to tackle the increasing labor shortage. Currently, there are 12 places where DAMA is being applied, and they are:

Requirements for Australia work visa

Australia has many work visas, and each of them has separate requirements. Employers will need visas depending on the type of work they have been invited to and the duration for which they can stay in the country. One of the requirements is the points-based system. If employees have applied for an ENS visa, they must demonstrate the skills required for the job through skills assessment. Other requirements to get a work visa are as follows:
  • English proficiency
Candidates have to prove their English language proficiency through the IELTS exam or its equivalent. The exam is based on the band system, and candidates have to score at least six bands to be able to apply for a visa.
  • Occupation in SOL
The occupation for which candidates are invited must be available in the Skilled Occupation List of Australia.
  • Skill and Experience
Candidates should have the skills and experience for the occupation for which they have been issued invitations to apply (ITAs).
  • Skill Assessment
Skills assessment has to be carried out by an approved assessing authority which includes the following:
    • CS
    • AACA
    • VETASSESS
  • Medical and PCC
Candidates have to provide health and character certificates in which they have to meet the required criteria.
  • Other criteria
Candidates need to have at least three years of experience.
    • The age of the candidates should be below 45.
