  • United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced a new unemployment insurance scheme for unemployment.
  • This scheme is launched to attract more international talent and investments for regional businesses in UAE.
  • The new unemployment scheme will be compensating the employees from the public and private sectors who lost their jobs that too for three months.
  • International workers and Emiratis both are permitted to this new unemployment insurance scheme.
  • The unemployed workers can get up to 60% of their previous salary. With this claim, they can get up to an amount of 20,000 dirhams.

How does the new unemployment insurance scheme work?

The new unemployment insurance scheme is also known as the social security scheme which ensures to help in sustaining a decent life for Emiratis and resident employees in their unemployment period by reducing their business risks.

This scheme is launched to aim and attract more international talent and investments for the regional business hubs in UAE.

This scheme offers to compensate the unemployed for up to three months for the employees of the public and private sectors who lost their jobs.

International workers and Emiratis are made eligible under this scheme. This move is made to aim at attracting the best national and international talent.

There are 85% of the international population is in the Gulf Arab States. UAE is been launching new and different types of visas and other social improvements to bring or attract and also to make skilled workers stay back.

The unemployed workers can claim 60% of their last salary which can make up to the amount of 20,000 dirhams.

Who are not eligible under this unemployment scheme?

Investors who are working in Companies of their own, part-time workers, domestic helpers, children who are under 18 age and retirees are not applicable and eligible to avail of the new unemployment insurance scheme.

 Countries that have been providing jobless insurance in and around UAE

Countries that provide unemployment insurance to support their citizens are:

  • Kuwait
  • Oman
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Gulf States Qatar

Whereas Bahrain provides jobless insurance for the ones who are residents or non-citizen workers.

Previous reforms in UAE

Employment is tied to the residence factor in Gulf countries like UAE. Considering the recent reforms, the UAE residents whose visas got cancelled can stay in the country for around six months, which was previously only 30 days.
