From January, the USCIS will replace the sticker that’s used to indicate the extension of the validity of the Green Cards of LPRs. The Form I-557 meant for Green Card will be replaced with Form I-797, a revised Notice of Action.
In the normal course, LPRs go on to file Form I-90 to apply for replacing their Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) as their existing card expires or nears expiry. The revised Form I-797 will act as a receipt to acknowledge USCIS having received Form I-90.
Form I-797 along with the Green Card will make the Green Card valid for another 12 months from the date indicated on the front of the green Card. It will be a temporary proof indicating the status of the LPR. Such a change of status of the Green Card will serve as documentation of identity, authorization of employment, and authorization to come back to the US after a temporary trip.
From January, applicants who submit Form I-90 to replace his/her Green Card will get the revised receipt via mail. This will happen 7-10 days after USCIS accepts the application. The receipt notice will be printed on secure paper.
