  • USCIS has issued more green card in FY 2021
  • The USCIS and US Department of State issued 149,733 employment-based immigrant visas combined

Abstract: The US Department of State and USCIS will be issuing 280,000 green cards in FY 2021.

The USCIS, or United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, plans to issue 280,000 green cards that are employment based before the fiscal year of 2021 ends on September 30.

The pandemic caused limited operations and closures at the US consular offices and embassies. It led to a massive number of available green cards. As of June 2022, the DOS or US Department of State and the USCIS have significantly utilized more visas than around the same time in FY 2021.

Waiting period for Green Card

Data from the visa office of the US shows that the American government had around 66,781 unutilized employment-based visas for green cards in the fiscal year of 2021.

Approximately 1.4 million immigrant candidates are waiting for green cards to be issued to them. Their application for the green card has been in the backlog for years.

A fee of 2,500 USD could reduce this waiting time by a minimum of seven months. The time would be brought down to around 2.5 years.
