Eligibility Criteria of Canadian Citizenship:

An applicant must meet the eligibility criteria to while applying for Canadian Citizenship. The eligibility criteria are mentioned below:

 

  • Be a Canadian Permanent resident –

Before applying for permanent residency in Canada, they must apply for Canadian Citizenship. Be physically present- IRCC allows permanent residents to apply for permanent residency after being physically Canadian resident for 3/5 years.

  • File your taxes-
  • Canadian PRs residing in Canada for atleast 3/5 years should file their taxes
  • Pass a Canadian Citizenship test

 

If the applicant is between 18 years to 54 years, would need to take up Canadian Citizenship on the date they sign the Canadian Citizenship application. The test is available in both French and English. The test would be thirty minutes long and contain multiple choice and actual/false questions.

  • Language Proficiency :

 

Candidates applying for citizenship must prove their ability to speak English or French. They have to score 4 points in CLB.

Reasons to be ineligible for Canadian Citizenship:

According to IRCC, the reasons of in-eligibility for citizenship include:

 

  • If they are serving a term of imprisonment.
  • Imprisoned outside Canada
  • Appeared under Criminal Act or Citizenship act
  • Under removal order
  • If the individual is in illegal activities
  • If the application is rejected in the past five years for misrepresentation.
  • If Canadian Citizenship was rejected because of fraudulent activities in the past ten years.
  • If an individual commits a crime outside Canada within four years of their stay, the same as committing a crime inside Canada, then the application will get rejected.
  • Being a Canadian PR, if they are convicted for terrorism, high criminal offence or spying offences about the country or territory.
