Working in Italy: How to get an Italy work visa

Italy is a Schengen country and one of the largest economies in the world. If you are a qualified individual seeking professional growth in Europe, Italy is a country you must consider.

To work in Italy, you as a non-EU national will need an Italy work visa.

Italy Work Visa

Italy work visa is a type of long-stay visa. It’s also known as a D visa. With this visa, you can only enter Italy. To stay in Italy, you will need a Residence permit. You must apply for the permit within 8 days of arriving in Italy.

Applying for Italy Work Visa

It will be necessary for you to be sure that you have the eligibility to apply for one. The government of Italy accepts applications for work permits for a few months every 1 or 2 years. This will entirely depend on the job market situation in Italy besides the state of immigration.

There’s also a quota set for the number of work permits Italy will give out in a year. Called “Decreto Flussi”, this quota system is applied by the Italian government to issue work permits for seasonal and non-seasonal workers.

You can apply for an Italy work visa only if:

• The Decreto Flussi’s status is open
• Your employer in Italy who will lodge an application for your work permit
• The quota for a year for work visas is left to be filled
• You are granted a work permit

Getting an Italy Work Visa and Work Permit

Foreign nationals need to have a job in Italy and meet certain criteria before applying for Italy work visa.

As a non-EU national, you will have to get permission to live and work in Italy by following this 3-part process:

1. Land a job with an employer in Italy who will hire you and file an application for your work permit.
2. Once your employer gets your work permit and sends it to you, you can apply for an Italy Work Visa. This can be done at the entity that represents Italy in your home country.
3. Once you get the Italy Work Visa, that’s when you can enter Italy. Only then you can apply for a Residence Permit that will allow you to stay and work in Italy legally.

It’s necessary to be mindful of the small period of time you will get to apply for an Italy work visa.

Documents required to apply

Apart from the set of supporting documents needed to apply for an Italian visa, you will have to submit:

• Copy of your signed work contract.
• Completed application form for Italian Long-Stay Visa.
• Passport pictures.
• Proof of sufficient financial means.
• The original and a copy of your Nulla Osta.
• Passport with a minimum of 2 blank pages; it must have validity for a minimum of 3 months after your visa’s duration.
• Proof of accommodation in Italy.

If any more documents are required, the Italian authorities can ask for them anytime. Also, any extra documents your employer needs will also have to be submitted.

After entering Italy, you have 8 days to apply for a residence permit at the local post office of your city. While applying for a residence permit, you must present your work visa and work permit. Other supporting documents are also necessary to be submitted.

After evaluating the application, the local Italian Police Headquarters gives you the residence permit.

The validity of the Italian Work visa is as long as the duration of the work contract which won’t be more than 2 years. The Italian Work Visa can be renewed for up to 5 years.
