It would help if you procured a German permanent residence permit to be a permanent resident in Germany. With it, you can live, study, and work in Germany. This residence permit can be procured as the next step to a temporary residence permit.
The temporary residence permit is the one you would need to come to the country with a German work visa.
Compared to a temporary residence visa, the permanent residence permit gives freedom of employment and movement. There won’t be restrictions on changing your employers or doing self-employment. You can also travel freely within the EU.
Even though your permanent residence permit is, well, permanent invalidity, the residency ID card has a 5 to 10-year term of validity to it. So, to maintain your permanent resident status in Germany, you must keep renewing your permit.
You must live and work in Germany for 5 years before applying for a permanent residence permit. So, first, you get a temporary residence permit of 2-year validity, along with a German work visa. If your work contract in Germany is on even after the first two years, you can take another temporary residence permit for two years.
One more year after that, you can fix an appointment with your German immigration office (Ausländerbehörde). This would be to apply for a permanent residence permit. With all necessary information submitted and the application lodged, in 4 to 8 weeks, you can obtain your permanent residence permit.
