Australia Post Study Work Permit

A Post-Study Work Permit stream or a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) is made for international students who recently graduated from an Australian educational institution with a degree. The visa allows its applicants to stay and work in the country for between 4-6 years, depending upon their educational qualifications. Also, the students must apply for this work permit within six months after completing their course. The family members of the visa holders are also allowed to accompany them to Australia.

The table below shows the changes made in the Australian Government’s Jobs and Skills Summit in September 2022. These changed visa duration came into effect on July 1, 2023:

Degree

Earlier visa duration

Visa duration from July 1, 2023

Bachelor degrees

2 years

4 years

Masters degrees

3 years

5 years

Doctoral degrees

4 years

6 years

These changes in the stay duration will be applicable only for a list of occupations and qualifications, including IT/Engineering/Nursing/Medical/Teaching. Also, the students must already hold a TGV and seek an extension.

However, the ongoing changes won’t impact the eligibility to apply for the PSW Stream for graduates who have studied, worked, and lived in a regional area of Australia. These students will still get 1 -2 years of extension in addition to the above extended period.
