With the Portugal Digital Nomad visa, a freelancer can legally work remotely for companies outside Portugal. The visa is issued to individuals who are either non-EU/EEA citizens or non-Swiss citizens, and it serves as a pathway for long-term residency in the country.

Portugal offers two visa types under its D 8 Visa program for Digital Nomad. The Portugal Digital Nomad visa comes in two forms:
Temporary Digital Nomad Visa
The temporary visa allows an individual to reside in Portugal for one year and make multiple entries. This temporary Digital Nomad visa allows an individual to enter and leave as needed during their stay in Portugal.
This visa can be extended up to four times for a five-year stay but can’t be used to get Permanent residency.
Long-term Residency Visa for Digital Nomads
Portugal’s Long-term visa is typically known as a residency permit. With this visa, once the digital nomad enters Portugal, they can apply for a two-year residency permit. Portugal visa holders can apply for a two-year residency permit. Visa holders can renew their permit for an additional three years for a five-year stay.
Portugal’s Long-term visa has a validity of four months. After residing in Portugal for five years, they can apply for permanent residency and Portuguese citizenship only if they meet the requirements under Portuguese law.

The criteria for a Portugal Digital Nomad visa
Must be aged above 18 years
Must not be a citizen of an EU/EEA country
Monthly income should exceed €3,548
Have a permit of a remote or freelance work
Secured place to reside in Portugal

A valid passport
Bank statement with a monthly salary of €3,040
Have a minimum balance of €36,480
Tax payment or tax refund
NIF registration certificate
Proof of remote employment
Health insurance
A police certificate
