Details of New immigration System for Visitor Visa

IRCC proceeded with a strategic immigration report for Canada’s future immigration system. IRCC’s new initiative is to reduce wait times and improve service standards for newcomers. IRCC added 13 additional countries, bringing the total to 67 in June 2023. From June 6, 2023, these 67 countries can apply through electronic travel authorization (eTA) instead of a visitor visa. Most eTA applications are approved within a minute.

Canada processed a significantly higher number of visitor visas towards the end of 2022. In November 2022, Canada processed 260,000 visitor visas. IRCC planned to prioritize visitor visas; the average count was 180,000 applications in 2019. This initiative will prioritize visitor visas through a new strategy that will benefit newcomers who visit Canada in the future.

The 13 newly eligible countries that can apply through eTA are Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Costa Rica, Morocco, Panama, the Philippines, Seychelles, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, and Uruguay.
